The official Pekoe Trail currently marks Stage 01: Hanthana → Galaha as Open under normal trail conditions. That status applies to the marked Pekoe Trail stage, not every ridge or informal Hanthana route. In April 2026, the Sri Lanka Army reported a 13-hour rescue after a hiker became lost at Katusu Konda during heavy rain, poor visibility and dense fog.

The quick answer

Why visit Hanthana Mountain Range?

Hanthana is the mountain landscape immediately south-west of Kandy: a broad protected range of grass-covered ridges, tea estates, forest patches, valleys and high viewpoints rather than one single tourist attraction.

That distinction matters. A short scenic outing, a marked Pekoe Trail walk and a long ridge traverse can all be described as “Hanthana,” but they can differ dramatically in distance, difficulty, navigation and exposure to bad weather.

Plan the route first — not just the destination

Central Province Tourism lists a maximum elevation of about 1,240 metres and identifies several different approaches. Before leaving Kandy, decide exactly where you will start, what route you will follow and where you expect to finish.

Environmental Protection Area

Hanthana is legally protected

The Central Environmental Authority lists the Hanthana Environmental Protection Area as covering 38.56 square kilometres in Kandy District.

It was declared under Gazette Notification No. 1641/28 dated 17 February 2010. The CEA identifies Hanthana as important for catchment protection, endemic and threatened flora and fauna, research, landscape, tourism and recreation.

Protected landscape, not an adventure playground

Stay on appropriate routes, carry out every piece of rubbish, do not remove plants or disturb wildlife, and respect local land access.

From Kandy to Galaha

A mountain range of ridges, valleys and tea country

Central Province Tourism describes Hanthana as extending from the Kandy side toward Galaha across parts of Gangawata, Patha Hewaheta, Udapalatha and Deltota.

The mountains are divided by tributary valleys of the Mahaweli River system. Hanthana is also an important watershed, giving rise to streams including Maha Oya, Garandi Oya, Dodamgolla Oya and Kuda Oya.

Not one universal trail

What hiking Hanthana is actually like

A Hanthana hike can involve tea-estate roads, grassland slopes, forest edges, steep ridges, exposed sections and periods of poor visibility. The difficulty depends heavily on the route.

Some visitors only make a shorter mountain outing. Others complete longer point-to-point walks or ridge traverses. There is no single distance or duration that accurately describes all Hanthana hiking.

Official tourism guidance

Four principal approaches to Hanthana

Central Province Tourism identifies four main approaches used to trek into the range. These should be understood as access corridors, not four identical fully marked tourist trails.

01

Udawela Tea Estate

An approach from the Kandy side across the Udawela Tea Estate area.

02

Old Radio Station Road

A route associated with the University of Peradeniya side and the old radio-station road.

03

Mahakande – Sarasavigama

Another approach into the range through the Mahakande and Sarasavigama area.

04

Deltota side

An approach from the southern side of the wider Hanthana landscape through Deltota.

Do not choose a route only from a social-media photo

Route length, private-land boundaries, vegetation, water, mobile signal and weather exposure can vary. If you are unfamiliar with the range, use a clearly defined route or experienced local guidance.

The clearest current marked-trail option

Pekoe Trail Stage 01: Hanthana to Galaha

The official Pekoe Trail currently marks Stage 01: Hanthana ⇌ Galaha as Open under normal trail conditions. The stage begins at the Ceylon Tea Museum in Hanthana and ends at Galaha Post Office.

The official trail description says the route climbs from the historic Hantana Estate and offers views of Kandy and the mountain range. Hikers are advised to follow the marked trail, standard trail-safety guidance and the Pekoe Trail navigation system.

Important distinction

“Pekoe Trail Stage 01 is open” does not mean every Hanthana ridge or informal shortcut is open, marked or safe.

Misty ridges above Kandy

Mountain views and changing visibility

Hanthana’s appeal comes from the contrast between open grass ridges, tea-covered slopes, wooded sections and broad views toward Kandy and the Central Highlands.

Mist and cloud can move across the upper ridges quickly. That creates dramatic scenery, but it can also erase landmarks and make route-finding harder.

Beautiful weather is not always safe weather

Low cloud can look photogenic from a viewpoint while making an exposed or unfamiliar ridge route difficult to navigate. Keep the route decision separate from the photography decision.

Watershed and biodiversity

Nature and biodiversity in Hanthana

Hanthana contains a mix of grasslands, natural forest patches, tea-growing areas and planted vegetation.

Central Province Tourism describes approximately 200 plant species and highlights significant bird and butterfly diversity. The CEA specifically identifies the protected area as supporting endemic and threatened flora and fauna.

PLANT

Flora

Grassland, forest patches, ferns, orchids and other mountain vegetation.

BIRD

Birdlife

Varied habitats support numerous bird species across different elevations.

BUTTER

Butterflies

Plant diversity creates suitable habitat for a rich butterfly community.

WATER

Watershed

The range is an important catchment feeding streams within the Mahaweli system.

Forecast first, hike second

Best time and weather for hiking Hanthana

There is no single guaranteed “best month” for every Hanthana route. For a specific hike, the current weather forecast, rainfall, wind and visibility matter more than a generic seasonal label.

AM

Start early

More daylight gives you extra time if navigation or weather slows the hike.

DRY

Choose stable weather

Avoid committing to exposed or unfamiliar ridges when severe weather is expected.

TURN

Be willing to turn back

Fog, rain and wind can change much faster than a city sightseeing plan.

Real mountain risk

Hanthana hiking safety

Hanthana deserves more preparation than a normal city walk. In April 2026, the Sri Lanka Army reported that a hiker became lost near Katusu Konda during rainfall, poor visibility and dense fog. Troops carried out an approximately 13-hour search-and-rescue operation before locating the person.

  • Choose the route and exit point before travelling.
  • Avoid hiking alone on unfamiliar ridge routes.
  • Start with enough daylight to finish safely.
  • Wear proper footwear with reliable grip.
  • Carry enough drinking water and basic rain protection.
  • Keep a charged phone and consider a power bank.
  • Download offline navigation where appropriate.
  • Do not rely completely on mobile signal.
  • Tell someone your route and expected return time.
  • Turn back if visibility or weather becomes unsafe.
  • Keep away from unstable or exposed edges.
If you cannot confidently identify your route in poor visibility, stop pushing deeper into the range.

Returning early is a better outcome than trying to force a summit or ridge traverse through worsening conditions.

Ridges, mist and scale

Photography tips for Hanthana

  • Use ridgelines as natural leading lines.
  • Include a hiker in wide compositions to show mountain scale.
  • Use mist creatively only from safe footing.
  • Protect phones and cameras from sudden rain.
  • Photograph layers of tea, forest, grassland and distant ridges.
  • Avoid stepping toward exposed edges for a better angle.
  • Early light can create dramatic depth across the hills.

Photography rule: no image is worth continuing into fog, high wind or unstable terrain.
